BRETT WHITELEY

Works on Paper and Limited Edition Prints

  7 July – 31 July 2003

Art Galleries Schubert is currently exhibiting a collection of Brett Whiteley graphics spanning the years 1961 to 1988.  This is a rare opportunity to view such a comprehensive selection of Whiteley’s limited edition silkscreens, lithographs and etchings.

The range parallels Whiteley’s career as a painter, beginning with the silkscreened abstract figure compositions of the early sixties.  It includes the renowned nudes in the superb series of lithographs TOWARDS SCULPTURE 1977, which were made in London with the influential Bernard Baer.  These were followed by a sequence of delicate line etchings and subtle sugarlift aquatints.

Many of the prints are in themselves unique, in that they incorporate individual hand colouring and collage.

“Etching offered me great challenges … the sugar lift involved drawing with a thick gluggish honey substance difficult to control … and to score the blackened copper plate to create the finest line possible.  But to draw with a greasy crayon on stone was so perfect for the nude.”   Brett Whiteley 26.12.82.

This exhibition is a must see for those who appreciate the calligraphic genius of Brett Whiteley’s works.
