This is Kay Singleton-Keller’s sixth solo exhibition with Art Galleries Schubert. “It always feels like home here” reflects Kay, as she fondly remembers the years she lived on the Gold Coast Hinterland at Mount Tamborine, where she began her career as an artist. Today Kay Keller’s work is internationally recognised and demonstrates a superb mastery and confidence of subject and technique. Rich in allegory and personal symbolism, her art making is an intimate voyage of self discovery and an exploration of the human condition amidst the “river of life and change”. Kay Keller’s current paintings remain strongly narrative with multiple layers of meaning. The solitary or grouped figures are characteristically depicted with unnaturally large limbs, hands and feet which symbolise the enormous strengths they have struggled to achieve. The large dark eyes suggest both knowledge and vulnerability. During a trip to France in 2001, Kay saw the Bayeux Tapestry for the first time and was profoundly affected. The tapestry inspired a series of paintings in which the images are enhanced with background text. Some of these can be viewed in this present exhibition. Still glowing with a sumptuous medieval luminosity, the subject of her new works “relate to my life at the moment, my two dogs, my friends old and new as well as moments of interest along the way.” This exhibition is exceptional and a must see for all art lovers. |
