John Coburn  1925

 

The art of John Coburn is a perfect blend of balance and discipline.. colour shape and form are used to create stylised works of precision and most importantly harmony.

His brilliance extends beyond painting to tapestries. He was commissioned to design tapestries for the Sydney Opera House.  In Paris, where he lived for some years he designed tapestries at the famous Aubusson Workshop. He also designed tapestries  for the John Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts in Washington USA.

In Australia he has held exhibitions in all the state capitals and is represented in all state galleries.

In the late 1960’s he was head of the Canberra School of Technical Art School.

He was the winner of the prestigious Blake Prize for Religious Art in the 1960’s and received an Honorary Doctorate from the James Cook University in 1991 and in 1980 he was awarded the Order of Australia.
