Deborah Halpern
|
Born Melbourne, 1957 - Deborah Halpern is a potter, a ceramicist, a sculptor, whose urge to push the boundaries of working with ceramics to the limit is perhaps best embodied by Angel in the moat of the National Gallery of Victoria and Ophelia at Southgate. To meet the less spacious demands of domestic environments, Halpern has created smaller creatures, that would sit happily in most courtyards and gardens. Whimsical and asymmetrical in form, these pieces continue to give free rein to Halpern's love of colour and sense of fun. They excude a vitality and simplicity that is enhanced by the range of exquisite glazes she uses. Spontaneous in form, these creatures are painted in a style that conjurs up visions of Gaudi and Picasso, yet have become distinctly Halpernesque in their ability to delight and surprise. Halpern has recently completed a major commision for the Australian National University. Covering an entire wall of the Union courtyard with painted tiles, she regards these public projects as a means of "altering the conversation for our children". With the child's eye near far from her own vision, Halpern continues to transform the Australian cityscape with landmarks of striking public art. There are more than a few homes and gardens, which have similarly been transformed by her exuberant mosaics and smaller outdoor sculptures. MAJOR COMISSIONS TO DATE INCLUDE: 'Angel', Bicentennial Sculpture, NGV; Fitzroy Nursery, iron entrance gates; Margaret Murphy Memorial Mural, Shepparton; 'Double Figure' for the International Garden & Greenery Exposition, Osaka; 'Ophelia', Southgate; Designs for the Australian Ballet.
